Serge Daney: 20 Years Later
June 20–August 5, 2012 at
Cinémathèque française
, Paris
It's been twenty years since Serge Daney's passing. He was only 48, a true critic who left a dense set of texts on cinema, TV, advertising, tennis and politics. Reviews, theoretical analyses, journalism and traveler pieces. He had a great impact on some of his contemporaries, and on today's younger critics in activity, as well as on filmmakers who were eager to show their work to a "clairvoyant" critic. His thinking was helpful to many viewers then. Twenty years after his death, we must tell the story of how and why his thinking is still helpful today.
On June 22, 2012 the Cinémathèque is dedicating several special events to discuss Daney's life and thinking. With Serge Toubiana, Patrice Rollet, Charles Tesson, Hervé Gauvile, Jean Hatzfeld, Françoise Huguier, Olivier Séguret, Alain Bergala, Stéphane Delorme, Jean-Marc Lalanne, Jean-François Rauger, Axelle Ropert, Dork Zabunyan, Pierre Eugène; filmmakers Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis, Jean Douchet, Pascal Kané, Serge Le Péron; and Xavier Beauvois, to be confirmed. Melvil Poupaud will read several texts by Daney and the special day will conclude with the screening of Serge Daney : le cinéma et le monde ( Serge Le Péron, 2012).
