Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood: Retrospective and Exhibition
October 15-January 19, 2008 at Cinémathèque française , Paris
Starting his career as an outstanding supporting actor in the 1950s and 1960s (notably in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, both staring James Dean), Dennis Hopper later became a singular and fascinating filmmaker. In 1969, he co-directed Easy Rider with Peter Fonda, the film that would launch a new generation of auteurs and actors in Hollywood. As Hopper turned into a star, he continued to direct. Until today, his filmography is one of the most original in contemporary American cinema, with works such as Out of the Blue, Hot Spot, and Backtrack. The Cinémathèque Française's tribute to Dennis Hopper is a complete retrospective of the films he directed, as well as an important selection of films in which he appeared.
The exhibition will present many video clips, rare archival material, and of course his photographs and other artistic works (giant billboards, imposing sculptures). What makes this project special is the inclusion of art pieces from Dennis Hopper's personal collection (works from emblematic artists such as Warhol, Basquiat, Ruscha, Salle, Rauschenberg, Herms, Berman) that resonate with Hopper's artistic and cinematographic practices.
